    YouTube Hashtag Generator FAQ

How many hashtags should a YouTube video have?

Three to five is plenty. YouTube shows the first three hashtags from the description above the title. If a video has more than 60 hashtags, YouTube ignores all of them.

    Where do hashtags go?

In the description or in the title. Hashtags in the description appear as links above the title; a hashtag written in the title appears there as a link and none are shown above it.

    Do hashtags increase views?

They make a video findable through that hashtag’s page and can help YouTube associate it with a topic. The effect is modest. No hashtag guarantees views, and unrelated hashtags can lead to removal under the misleading metadata policy.

    Do I need #Shorts for a Short?

No. YouTube recognises a Short by its vertical format and length. The hashtag is optional; many creators add it for clarity.

Are hashtags and tags the same?

No. Hashtags are visible, clickable and written with # in the title or description. Tags are hidden keywords entered in a separate field in YouTube Studio. For those, use the YouTube Tag Generator.

    Why #CamelCase?

Capitalising each word makes a run-together hashtag readable, and screen readers pronounce the words separately. Hashtags are not case-sensitive, so both forms lead to the same page.

    How hashtags work on YouTube

A hashtag on YouTube is a keyword preceded by the # sign, written in a video’s title or description. YouTube turns it into a link to a page listing other videos with the same hashtag. Up to three hashtags from the description are also displayed above the video title, where they are among the first things a viewer sees.

That gives hashtags two jobs. They are a navigation aid, letting viewers who like one video on a subject find more. And they are a light signal to YouTube about what the video belongs to. Both jobs are served by precision. A hashtag that names the actual subject, the series or the event places the video among its peers. A broad hashtag used by millions of unrelated videos places it nowhere in particular.

YouTube sets clear limits. Hashtags contain no spaces. Hashtags unrelated to the video, repeated hashtags and hashtags used to harass or mislead violate policy. Over-tagging is counterproductive by design: beyond 60 hashtags, every hashtag on the video is ignored.

A practical routine is to choose one hashtag for the specific topic, one for the wider subject area, and one for your series or channel, and to use the same series hashtag on every related video. This generator follows that logic: your own words first, then established hashtags for the area you choose.
