PDF to JPG FAQ
Which DPI should I choose?
72 DPI gives small images suited to screens and messaging. 150 DPI is sharp enough for most documents and slides. 300 DPI is intended for printing and produces large files, so use it only when you need the detail.
Why JPG rather than PNG?
JPG files are much smaller for pages that contain photographs or scans. For pages that are mostly text or line art, or if you need a transparent background, the PDF to PNG tool will give crisper results.
Can I convert only one page?
Yes. Type the page number in the page range field, for example 4, and only that page is exported.
Is there a page limit?
No fixed limit. Long documents at 300 DPI need a lot of memory, so on a phone it is safer to convert in ranges of 20 to 30 pages.
Is the text still selectable in the JPG?
No. A JPG is a picture of the page. If you need the words, use PDF to Text or PDF to Word instead.
What happens when a PDF page becomes a JPG
PDF pages are resolution-independent: text and line drawings are stored as shapes that can be drawn at any size. Converting to JPG rasterises the page, meaning it is drawn onto a grid of pixels at a resolution you choose. An A4 page is about 595 × 842 pixels at 72 DPI, 1240 × 1754 at 150 DPI and 2480 × 3508 at 300 DPI.
JPG compression is designed for photographs and smooths over fine detail slightly. At high quality settings this is invisible; at low settings, small text can show faint halos. If a page is mainly text and you want the sharpest edges, PNG is the better target format. JPG has no transparency, so pages are drawn on a white background.
Typical reasons to turn PDF pages into images include posting a page on social media or in a chat app that does not preview PDFs, inserting a page into a presentation, creating a thumbnail for a document library, or sharing a single page with someone on a phone. For these purposes 150 DPI is usually enough. Choose a higher resolution when the image will be printed or when small text must remain readable, and remember that the image is no longer searchable or selectable as text.
