JPG to PNG FAQ

Will converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?

No. Detail lost when the JPG was created cannot be restored. Converting to PNG simply stops any further loss, which matters if the image will be edited and saved several times.

Why is the PNG larger than the JPG?

JPG discards information to make photos small; PNG keeps every pixel. A photograph typically becomes three to ten times larger as a PNG. For photos that do not need editing, JPG or WebP is the more efficient choice.

Does the PNG have a transparent background?

No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG is fully opaque. To cut out a background, use the Background Remover tool.

Is EXIF metadata kept?

No. The camera data and GPS location stored in the JPG are not written to the PNG.

How many files can I convert at once?

Up to 80 files of up to 50 MB each per batch.

JPG and PNG: what changes when you convert

JPG is a lossy format built for photographs. Each time a JPG is opened, edited and saved again, it is re-compressed and loses a little more detail, a problem known as generation loss. PNG is lossless: saving it any number of times never changes the pixels.

Converting a JPG to PNG therefore freezes the image in its current state. It is the right step before editing work, and for images that contain text or sharp edges where further JPG compression would add visible halos. It is not a way to make files smaller: expect the PNG to be considerably larger than the JPG it came from.
