WebP to JPG FAQ

Why do websites save images as WebP?

WebP files are smaller than JPG and PNG, so sites use them to load faster. Browsers display them fine, but some desktop programs and upload forms still expect JPG.

Does converting WebP to JPG lose quality?

A small amount, because JPG is lossy. At 90% quality the difference is not visible in normal use. Avoid converting back and forth repeatedly.

What about animated WebP files?

Only the first frame is converted. JPG does not support animation.

Will the JPG be bigger than the WebP?

Usually yes, often by 25–50%, because JPG compression is less efficient. Lower the quality slider if size matters.

Should I use JPG or PNG for a WebP with transparency?

Use PNG if you need to keep the transparency; the Image Converter tool can do that. Use JPG when a solid background is acceptable and you want a smaller file.

WebP compatibility in practice

WebP has been supported by every major browser since 2020, which is why right-clicking and saving an image now often produces a .webp file. Support outside the browser is less even. Older versions of office suites, some photo-printing kiosks, many online forms and a number of messaging and marketplace apps still accept only JPG or PNG.

Converting to JPG is the simplest fix. The image is decoded by your browser and re-encoded as a standard baseline JPG, which virtually all software written in the past thirty years can read. Transparent regions are filled with the colour you choose, with white as the default.
