Two ways to write an hour

Time is written in two incompatible ways. Clocks use sexagesimal notation, hours and minutes in sixties, while spreadsheets, payroll and invoices use decimals. The same duration appears as 2:45 in one place and 2.75 in another, and confusing the two is one of the most common errors in timesheets.

The conversion itself is simple: an hour has sixty minutes. Multiply hours by sixty to get minutes, divide minutes by sixty to get hours. The fractional part of decimal hours is a share of sixty, so a quarter hour is 15 minutes and a tenth of an hour is 6 minutes.

The trap is the dot. “1.30” looks like one hour thirty, but as a decimal it means one hour and 0.3 of an hour, which is 18 minutes. This converter accepts both notations unambiguously: a colon for clock time, a dot for decimals.

For mixed results the breakdown shows the whole hours, then the remaining minutes and seconds, so 2.7583 hours reads as 2 hours 45 minutes 30 seconds. The table of common values covers the conversions most people look up.
