Income Tax Calculator

Income tax depends on where you live and on the tax year, so this calculator does not pretend one set of rates fits everyone. Enter the tax bands, allowance and other rules that apply to you, or start from a preset that states its country, tax year and source, then adjust it. You see the taxable income, the tax in each band, the total, and your effective and marginal rates.

Income Tax Calculator FAQ

Is the result my exact tax?

No. It is an estimate of income tax under the rules you enter. Real tax depends on many personal factors, such as other income, reliefs, credits and social contributions. Use it for planning, and rely on your tax authority or an adviser for exact figures.

Why are the presets for 2025?

They are tax years whose rules were published and verified when the presets were written. Rates and thresholds change, often every year. Check the current figures with the official source named in each preset and edit the values if they differ.

What is the difference between the effective and the marginal rate?

The effective rate is total tax divided by gross income: what you pay on average. The marginal rate is the rate on your next unit of income, which is what matters when you consider a raise or extra work.

What is an allowance taper?

Some systems reduce the tax-free allowance for high incomes. In the UK the personal allowance falls by £1 for every £2 of income above £100,000, which creates a high marginal rate in that range.

What is a rebate with marginal relief?

A rebate cancels tax up to a limit for incomes below a threshold, as India’s section 87A does. Marginal relief prevents someone just above the threshold from paying more tax than the income above it.

Does it include social security contributions?

No. National Insurance, Social Security, Medicare and similar contributions are separate from income tax and are not included in the presets.

How progressive income tax works

Most countries tax income progressively: income is divided into bands, and each band is taxed at its own rate. A higher rate applies only to the part of income that falls in the higher band, never to all of it. That is why moving into a higher band never reduces take-home pay, a common misunderstanding.

Before the bands are applied, income is reduced by a tax-free allowance or standard deduction and by other permitted deductions. What remains is taxable income. Some systems then subtract rebates or credits from the tax itself, and some add a surcharge or cess as a percentage of the tax. Each of these steps appears separately in the result so that you can follow the calculation.

Two rates summarise the outcome. The effective rate, total tax divided by gross income, shows the overall burden and is useful for budgeting. The marginal rate, the rate on the next unit of income, decides how much of a raise or a bonus you keep. Tapers and rebates can make marginal rates jump in particular income ranges.

Tax law is national and changes often, and real tax depends on details no general calculator knows. The presets here state exactly what they include and what they omit, and every figure is editable. Treat the result as an estimate, check current rates with the official source, and consult a qualified adviser for decisions that matter.
