YouTube Thumbnail Downloader FAQ

Is it legal to download a YouTube thumbnail?

Thumbnails are protected by copyright and belong to the video's creator or YouTube. Downloading one for reference, commentary or to link back to the video is generally acceptable; reusing it as your own artwork or for commercial purposes requires the owner's permission.

Why is the HD thumbnail missing for some videos?

YouTube creates the 1280 × 720 version only when the uploader supplied a custom thumbnail or the video is in HD. Older and low-resolution videos have only the smaller sizes.

Does this download the video?

No. It retrieves the thumbnail image only.

Does it work for private videos?

Thumbnails are available for public and unlisted videos. Private or deleted videos have no accessible thumbnail.

What format are the thumbnails?

JPG. The largest version is 1280 × 720 pixels, which is the size YouTube recommends for uploaded thumbnails.

How YouTube thumbnails are stored

Every YouTube video is identified by an 11-character ID, the part after v= in a watch link. YouTube stores a set of preview images for each video on its image servers, at addresses built from that ID and a fixed file name for each size. That predictable structure is what makes it possible to display the thumbnail from a link alone.

The image shown most widely on the site is the 16:9 medium or max-resolution version. The 4:3 sizes have black bars above and below, a leftover from when videos were not widescreen. For reuse, the max-resolution file is the one to choose whenever it exists, since it scales down cleanly for any purpose.

Thumbnails do much of the work of getting a video clicked, which is why creators study them closely. Effective ones use a single clear subject, large readable text of three or four words at most, strong contrast and a face showing emotion where it suits the topic. Because the image is often seen at a very small size on phones, details that look fine at full resolution can disappear. Viewing a thumbnail at small and large sizes side by side is a quick way to judge whether it still communicates at the size most people will see it.
