Duplicate Text Remover FAQ

How does it decide two lines are duplicates?

Lines are compared as whole strings. With the default options, differences in upper and lower case and in leading or trailing spaces are ignored; you can turn either option off for an exact comparison.

Which copy of a duplicate is kept?

The first occurrence by default, so the list keeps its original order. Choose “Keep last occurrence” if later entries should take precedence, for example in a log.

Can it remove duplicate words within a sentence?

This tool works line by line. To de-duplicate words, put each word on its own line first.

Does it change the text of the lines it keeps?

With “Trim spaces” on, leading and trailing spaces are removed from the output lines. Otherwise lines are output exactly as entered.

Is there a size limit?

No fixed limit. Very large inputs depend on your device's memory.

Why duplicates creep into lists

Lists assembled from several sources almost always contain repeats: the same address exported from two systems, a keyword collected twice, a row copied when a spreadsheet was merged. The repeats are rarely identical character for character. One copy has a capital letter, another a trailing space left by a copy and paste, which is why a naive exact comparison misses them.

Normalising each line before comparing it, by trimming spaces and folding case, catches those near-identical entries while the output keeps the original spelling of the copy that is retained. The duplicate report is worth a glance: a line that appears many times can point to a problem in the process that produced the data.
