What does lorem ipsum mean?
It is scrambled Latin derived from Cicero's “De finibus bonorum et malorum”, written in 45 BC. Words were cut and altered, so it no longer has meaning, which is exactly why it works as placeholder text.
Why use placeholder text instead of real text?
It lets people judge a layout's typography and spacing without being distracted by reading the content. Its letter frequency is close enough to real languages to look natural.
Should lorem ipsum go live on a website?
No. Search engines treat it as low-quality content and visitors see an unfinished page. Replace all placeholder text before publishing.
Is lorem ipsum suitable for testing other languages?
Only for languages written in the Latin alphabet. For right-to-left or non-Latin scripts, test with real sample text in that script, because word lengths and line breaking differ.

Lorem ipsum is commonly said to have been used by typesetters since the 1500s, though the earliest firm evidence dates from the twentieth century, when it appeared on Letraset transfer sheets in the 1960s. Desktop publishing software adopted it in the 1980s, and it has been the default placeholder text of the design world ever since.
Good placeholder text resembles real content in shape: varied word lengths, sentences of different sizes and paragraphs that are not all identical. That variation is what reveals awkward line breaks, uneven columns and boxes that are too small, which is the whole point of testing a layout before the real words arrive.
