Markdown to HTML FAQ

Which Markdown flavour is supported?

CommonMark with GitHub Flavoured Markdown extensions: tables, fenced code blocks with language hints, strikethrough, task lists and automatic links.

Does it add syntax highlighting to code blocks?

Code blocks are output as <pre><code class="language-…"> so that a highlighter such as Prism or highlight.js on your site can colour them. No highlighting markup is added by this tool.

Can I use raw HTML inside Markdown?

Yes. Inline HTML is passed through to the output. In the preview, anything executable such as script tags and event-handler attributes is removed for safety.

Why do my single line breaks disappear?

In standard Markdown a single newline is treated as a space; a blank line starts a new paragraph. Enable the Line breaks option to turn every newline into a line break, as GitHub comments do.

Is the HTML output sanitised too?

The preview is always sanitised. The HTML tab shows the sanitised markup by default, which is what you should use when the Markdown comes from someone else.

Markdown and the HTML it produces

Markdown was designed in 2004 as a way to write formatted text that still reads naturally as plain text. A line starting with # is a heading, text wrapped in asterisks is emphasised, a dash starts a list item. A converter reads those conventions and emits the corresponding HTML elements: h1, em, ul and li.

Because Markdown has no styling of its own, the appearance of the result depends entirely on the CSS of the page where the HTML ends up. That is its strength: content written once can be published in a blog, documentation site or email with each applying its own design. The standalone download here includes a small neutral stylesheet so the file looks presentable when opened directly.
