QR Code Scanner FAQ
Why is the camera not working?
Your browser needs permission to use the camera, and the page must be loaded over HTTPS. Check the camera icon in the address bar, and make sure no other app is using the camera.
Is it safe to scan QR codes?
The code itself is harmless, but it can lead to a malicious website. This scanner shows you the full link first. Check the domain carefully, especially for payment or login pages.
Why can it not read my image?
Make sure the whole code, including its white margin, is visible, sharp and not too small. Crop the image around the code and try again.
Can it read barcodes too?
It reads QR codes. In browsers that support it, other common 2D codes may also be recognised.
Are my camera images stored?
No. Frames are analysed in your browser and discarded immediately.
Reading QR codes safely
QR codes are convenient precisely because they hide their content: you cannot tell by looking where a code leads. That makes them a popular vehicle for phishing, from stickers placed over genuine parking-meter codes to emails urging you to scan a code to “verify” an account. Seeing the decoded content before acting on it is the simplest defence.
A decoder locates the three finder squares, works out the grid size and orientation, samples each module as dark or light, and then applies error correction to recover the data. That is why a code can still be read when it is slightly damaged or photographed at an angle, as long as enough of it is clear.
