How to use Barcode Generator
- Choose the barcode type. Use EAN-13 or UPC-A for retail products and Code 128 for general labels.
- Type the number or text to encode. For EAN and UPC, the check digit is added automatically.
- Adjust the bar width, height and whether the human-readable text is shown.
- Download the barcode as PNG or SVG.

Barcode Generator FAQ
Can I make up an EAN or UPC number for a product?
Not for products sold through retailers. Retail barcode numbers must be licensed from GS1 so that they are unique worldwide. This tool draws the barcode for a number you already have; for internal use, made-up numbers are fine.
Which format should I use?
EAN-13 for retail products in most of the world, UPC-A in North America, Code 128 for alphanumeric labels and logistics, Code 39 where older scanners require it, and ITF-14 for outer shipping cartons.
What is a check digit?
A final digit calculated from the others. Scanners recompute it to detect misreads. If you enter the full number including a check digit, the tool verifies it.
How small can I print a barcode?
For EAN-13 the nominal width is about 37 mm, and it can usually be reduced to 80% before scanning becomes unreliable. Keep the quiet zones on either side clear, and print in dark bars on a light background.
Should I use PNG or SVG?
SVG for print, because it stays sharp at any size. PNG for documents and screens. If you use PNG for print, export it at a large bar width so it is not scaled up.
How one-dimensional barcodes work
A barcode encodes characters as a sequence of dark bars and light spaces of different widths. A scanner sweeps across the pattern, measures the widths and translates them back into characters. Start and stop patterns tell the scanner where the code begins and ends, and quiet zones on either side separate it from surrounding print.
Different symbologies trade capacity for robustness. EAN and UPC hold only digits and have a fixed length, which makes them fast and reliable at checkouts. Code 128 can encode all ASCII characters compactly and is the workhorse of logistics. Code 39 is less dense but self-checking and still common in industry. Choosing the right one depends on the data you need and the scanners that will read it.
