Instagram Story Resizer FAQ
What size is an Instagram story?
1080 pixels wide by 1920 pixels tall, an aspect ratio of 9:16. Smaller images with the same shape, such as 720 × 1280, are enlarged to fill the screen.
Where should I avoid putting text?
Instagram overlays your profile name and progress bar at the top and the reply field at the bottom. Keep important text and faces outside roughly the top and bottom 250 pixels of a 1920-pixel story.
Why use a blurred background instead of black bars?
A blurred copy of the photo continues its colours to the edges of the screen, which looks intentional and calmer than black or white bars and keeps viewers focused on the picture.
Can I make a story from a portrait photo?
Yes. Portrait photos are usually close to 9:16 already, so cropping removes only a little at the sides, while Fit + blur adds thin blurred strips.
How do highlight covers work?
Highlight covers are shown as small circles on your profile. Upload a 9:16 image and keep the symbol or text inside the central circle; the rest is hidden.
Designing for the vertical screen
Stories take over the full phone screen, which makes them immersive but unforgiving: the format is far taller than most photos. A typical camera photo is 3:2 or 4:3 in landscape orientation, so placing it in a 9:16 frame leaves more than half the screen empty. There are three ways to deal with that space, and each suits different content.
Cropping uses the whole screen but discards most of a landscape photo, which works for portraits and close-ups. Adding solid bars keeps the photo intact but looks unfinished. The blurred background, used by many apps, is a middle ground: the photo appears in full, and its own colours extend softly to the edges so the frame feels complete. This tool also darkens the blur slightly so the sharp photo stands out.
Instagram places interface elements over stories, so the usable area is smaller than the image. Treat the top and bottom strips as decoration and keep anything that must be read or recognised in the middle. Stickers, polls and captions added in the app also need room, so leaving some calm space helps.
File size matters on mobile networks. A 1080 × 1920 JPG of a photograph is usually well under 1 MB, but if you post many stories while travelling, the 720-pixel option can halve the upload size with little visible difference on a phone screen.
