Twitter/X Image Resizer FAQ

What size should images in X posts be?

A single image of 1600 × 900 (16:9) is shown in full in the timeline. Portrait images up to 4:5 are also displayed fully on most clients; taller images are cropped in the preview and shown in full when opened.

What size is the X header?

1500 × 500 pixels. On phones the header is shown shorter, and your profile picture covers part of the lower left, so keep important content in the middle.

What is a link card image?

When a web page sets twitter:card to summary_large_image, X shows a large preview using the page’s image. 1200 × 628 is a good size that also works for other networks.

How large can image files be?

X accepts photos up to 5 MB and converts most uploads to JPG. Uploading at the displayed size keeps quality predictable.

Does X keep transparency in PNG files?

Small PNG files may keep transparency, but larger ones are converted to JPG with a background. Use Fit + colour to choose that background yourself.

How X crops images, and how to avoid it

X shows images in the timeline at a fixed maximum shape. Images within that shape appear in full; taller images are cropped in the preview, with an algorithm deciding which part to show. For charts, infographics and screenshots, an automatic crop can hide the very point of the post. Sizing images to 16:9 or a moderate portrait ratio before posting keeps them intact.

Multi-image posts follow different rules: two, three or four images are arranged in a grid of smaller tiles, each cropped to fit. When the content of each image matters, keep subjects centred or post fewer images per tweet.

The header and profile picture form a single composition on your profile page. The profile picture sits over the lower left of the header on desktop and more centrally on mobile. Keeping header text towards the centre or right side prevents the two from colliding.

Link cards come from the shared page, not from the post. If you manage a website, adding twitter:card and an image of about 1200 × 628 to your pages gives every share a large, attractive preview, and the same image usually works for Facebook, LinkedIn and messaging apps too.
