Facebook Cover Resizer FAQ

What size is a Facebook cover photo?

Facebook displays page covers at 820 × 312 pixels on computers and 640 × 360 on phones. Uploading at 1640 × 624, twice the desktop size, keeps the image sharp on high-resolution screens. The older 851 × 315 size still works.

Why is my cover cut off on mobile?

Phones show a narrower, taller section of the cover, so the left and right edges disappear. Keep text, faces and logos within roughly the central 70% of the width.

What size is a Facebook group cover?

1640 × 856 pixels. Group covers are shown fairly large, so this size keeps them sharp.

How big is a Facebook event cover?

1920 × 1005 pixels, a roughly 1.91:1 shape similar to link previews.

Should I use JPG or PNG?

Use JPG for photographs and PNG for covers with logos, illustrations or text, which Facebook compresses less aggressively when uploaded as PNG.

Designing a cover that survives every screen

Cover photos are the most awkward image on Facebook because the same file is shown at different shapes. On a desktop the cover is a wide strip; on a phone the visible area is closer to 16:9, so the sides are trimmed. The profile picture of a personal profile or page also overlaps the cover in some layouts. A design that looks perfect on one device can therefore lose its text on another.

The reliable approach is to design for the overlap: put the essential message in the centre and treat the edges as background that may or may not be visible. Wide landscapes, textures and blurred backgrounds work well at the edges, while logos and text belong in the middle.

Resolution matters because covers are large. Facebook recompresses every upload, and small or heavily compressed covers quickly look blurry on high-resolution displays. Uploading at twice the displayed width gives the compression more detail to work with.

Group and event covers use different shapes from page covers, so a single image rarely works for all of them. Prepare each type separately here, adjusting the frame for each, rather than reusing one file everywhere.
